Description

This species of Syzygium is fairly well-known in Asian cuisine. Commonly referred to as Daun Salam, it is also known as the Indonesian bay leaf, though it originates from an entirely different plant family. The leaves are used in a similar manner to bay leaves and provide a unique flavor that is hard to substitute in signature Indonesian dishes such as Soto ayam. They can be used either fresh or dried, offering a subtle yet distinctive sweet and savory citrus flavor. Apart from its culinary uses, it is a nice ornamental tree, that can often be recognized for its full leaf crown, beautiful white flowers and bright red berries. For many years, it has been the most planted ornamental trees in Singapore to the dislike of many drivers due to the many birds it attracts above parking places.

In its natural habitat, the tree can grow up to 25 meters tall. Indoors, however, it can be maintained as a manageable houseplant with some light pruning. Leaves can be harvested regularly, though care should be taken not to remove too many at once to ensure the plant remains healthy. It thrives in full sun to semi-shade and should be watered moderately, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

Sowing description: Sow the seeds upon arrival shallowly in sowing mix, keeping the soil constantly slightly moist a temperature of 25-30 deg C.

Michiel
