The marble berry is also known as the jewel of the forest, this is due to the clusters of wonderful berries growing on the plant. These berries reflect the most light of all organisms on the planet: 30% of the incoming light is reflected, which is even more than the famous Menelaus blue morpho butterfly (Morpho menelaus) and the scarab beetle. The perfect positioning of the cells on the surface of the berry reflects almost all blue light, this is also the reason why the berries are beautifully blue coloured. The colourful shine is the effect of slight reflection of other colours. Bird are attracted to the beautiful colours and use the small berries (4 mm) as decoration in their nests. This way the seeds are spread though the rainforest, while they are not edible. The plant stays quite small with a maximum height of 50 cm and has large, narrow leaves.
The flowers are pink white. The plant can be kept as an indoor plant with a minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius. Make sure the plant is placed in a shady spot (no direct sunlight) and spray regularly with some water when the air humidity is low. It is a rare species and is collected for us in Cameroon.

Sowing description: Let the seeds soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Afterwards, remove the shell of the berry to find several seeds. Sow these seeds in a sowing mix at a temperature of 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. Keep the soil slightly moist and germinate in a light spot (no direct sunlight).

Goede opkomst van ongeveer 15 zaailingen, binnen een week of drie. Ze stonden naast de kachel, onder een glasplaatje. Misschien komen er nog meer op, maar op zich zijn dit er wel genoeg :) Ze staan nu in een vitrine onder een groeilamp voor zaailingen. Benieuwd hoe ze zich verder ontwikkelen en of het tot bloei en vruchtvorming kan komen.

Update: kon er de klok op gelijk zetten binnen 1 maand alles gekiemt. Nu zo n 30 plantjes in een bak met deksel op 25 graden.. Heb wel ondervonden dat ze niet te snel in de open lucht kunnen dan verschrompelen ze binnen 1 dag. Kiemertje terug gezet en kwam weer tot leven...ik denk dat ze daarin getraind moeten worden?

joepie, na precies 1 maand de eerste drie kiemertjes had de hoop op gegeven na de hitte van afgelopen zomer.... uit voorzorg nog wat nieuwe gezaaid dat beloofd wat.

Na ze aangeschaft te hebben zo snel mogelijk de zaadjes van 1 besje gezaaid. Afgedekt met folie en op een lekkere warme plek kwamen ze na ruim 6 weken al op. Er zijn er bij mij nu al 7 opgekomen waarvan een van het tweede besje die ik later heb gezaaid. Kans is groot dat het er nog meer worden. Mooi en bijzonder plantje! Mooi ook hoe Onszaden met de verkoop van deze bessen de planten in hun land van oorsprong probeert te beschermen!

Geweldig!! Had 3 besjes gekocht; dat zijn niet 3 zaden, maar eerder 30-40! Eerst wat ongeduldig, leek niet te lukken. Maar nu, na een maand of 2, heb ik 18 zaailingen! Hoezo zeldzaam? ;-) groeien als spreekwoordelijke kool! Geweldige zaak, Onszaden, aanrader!!

8 maanden gewacht op de zaden en meteen gezaaid toen ik ze binnen had. Het duurde even maar de eerst is gekiemd en nu voorzichtig het kleine Marmerbes je verder opkweken
