Description:
The flowers of the frangipane are extraordinary. Besides their pink-white colour with a yellow hue in the centre, they also have a wonderful smell. They are well known for their use in flower necklaces (leis) in Hawaii. Inhabitants wear this lei at special occasions and tourists are welcomed with leis to the islands. However, the species is actually originally from mid America and is the national flower of Nicaragua. In Asia the species is known as the temple tree, because it used to be planted at temples a lot. The frangipane can also be kept as a pot plant and it needs a sunny spot and a well draining soil. When the plant starts flowering, you will understand why it has been used in perfumes for centuries. The smell is lovely and attracts hawk moths for pollination in nature. Once a year the plant loses all of its leaves and only the succulent like stems remain for a period. An interesting process to witness.
