The flowers of the banana shrub are cream-colored with a purple outline, and spread a banana-like smell. The species originates in western China and grows up to 5 meters in height. In temperate climates the plants stays a lot smaller, because it needs to be kept in a tub at a minimum of -5 degC. A stand in the shadow is possible, but to have a higher chance on flowers it is best to keep the plant in a stand with more sun.
Since 2006 the species is classified in the genus Magnolia, formerly known as Michelia.
Sowing description: Soak the seeds for 24 hours in lukewarm water, after which they can be sown in sowing mix. Keep the soil constantly moist, cover the soil with plastic foil or glass, and let the seeds germinate in a warm spot in the house (25-28 degC). Lightly sanding the seeds with sand paper beforehand stimulates germination.
