The saguaro cactus is the largest cactus in the world that can grow up to 12 metres and sometimes even taller. Currently the 'Champion Saguaro' is 13,8 metres tall. There was a taller one of 23,8 metres, but unfortunately it fell over during a storm in 1986. However, it grows very slowly so you do not have to worry about space problems in your house. The height will be ± 2 metres after 50 years and the first branch might grow after 75 years. The largest specimens are at least 200 years old to have reached such heights. The plant grows in the Sonoran desert in the south-west of the United States and in the north-west of Mexico. Nowadays, the Saguaro National Park offers the plants protection, because the population declined significantly in the last century.The plant produces white flowers that bloom predominantly at night and are pollinated by bats. Often times, older plants have many signs of damage. Usually caused by lightening strikes and bird nests, but also name carvings from tourists unfortunately damage the plant.
Overall, it is an impressive species that grows well in a sunny spot indoors.
Sowing description: Sow seeds superficially in a mix of sand and sowing mix (1:1). Cover with plastic or glass and place container in a light spot at room temperature. Germination usually occurs after 2 to 4 weeks.

Zaden onder hps lamp gezet met een temperatuur van 30 tot 35 graden . De helft van de zaden komen uit. Ik gebruik een 600watt hps lamp belichting 16 uur en 8 uur donker . Zaden kwamen uit na 8 dagen. Zonder deksel dat de grond volledig kan uitdrogen. Tot 3x toe water geven met plantenspuit. ( per dag) Grond is continue uitgedroogd, door de hoge temperatuur. Bij de kieming ziet het eruit gelijk twee gebogen blaadjes links en rechts. Ik blijf de planten belichten, ook gedurende de winter. Ook de zaden behandeld met solabiol , om een beter kieming te bekomen, dit meng je in het water, en geef ik dat met de plantenspuit . Zeer interessante planten. Ik ben tevreden om deze in de collectie te hebben.
Most of the cacti germinated really quickly, in about two weeks, and the little cacti are already happily growing, with the remaining late seeds starting to germinate. They are so cute, I can't wait for them to get bigger. Thank you very much.

Oppervlakkig gezaaid in een mix van zand en zaaigrond (1:1) met wat perliet, wat besproeid en daarna afgedekt. Toen op een zonnige plek gezet. Al binnen een paar dagen ontkiemde meer dan de helft van de zaden (8/10). Nu nog een paar jaar wachten tot de minuscule zaailingen wat gegroeid zijn. :)
