Family: Malvaceae
Scientific name: Adansonia digitata
Common name: African baobab
Origin: Western Africa
The African baobab is the most famous and widespread baobab species and is the only one that appears on the mainland of Africa. The most striking aspect of the baobab is the thick trunk, which can reach a radius of tens of meters. In these trunk the tree stores water so that it can withstand long periods of drought. In these drier times the tree loses all of its leaves as if the tree is upside down with its roots in the air. The tree produces edible fruits that resemble to hanging dead rats according to the local African population. The baobab is definitely worth it as a houseplant or bonsai tree. Provide it with a sunny spot and some well-drained soil. In winter, the tree will hibernate and lose its leaves. During this period give it little water. Regularly water throughout the rest of the year.
