This rare species occurs naturally on the Poor Knights Islands and the Hen Island in north-eastern New Zealand. The plant grows on the steep and difficult to reach cliffs along the coast line, which partly explains why the species hasn’t been discovered until 1924. The species sometimes grows as epiphyte in other trees, such as the Pohutukawa. The habitats of this species are now protected as nature reserves, protecting the plant from going extinct. Because of its particular inflorescence it is gaining popularity in the collections of plant enthusiasts. The many red flowers form bristles on long flower stems, and have remarkable stamens. The flowers are pollinated by birds and butterflies. The species can be kept outside part of the year and grows best with a day temperature of 15-25 degC, but should be protected against frost. A sunny spot, well-drained soil and frequent watering is important. Inflorescence can be stimulated by keeping the plant in a deep but narrow pot.
Sowing instructions: Sow the seeds directly on the surface of potting mix. Keep the soil constantly moist, cover with foil or glass and let the seeds germinate at room temperature.
