Description

This aroid grows naturally in muddy streams and lakes, usually standing in the water or in stretches that flood regularly. The species is found on islands east of Africa, including Madagascar, Comoros, Reunion and Mauritius. But there are also some mainland populations in Tanzania in particular. The banana-like trunk can grow up to 30 cm thick and up to about 2 metres high. This stem forms a nice combination with the large, Alocasia-like leaves.

The water banana can be kept as a houseplant, considering a watertight pot or container with pond soil, water lily soil or something else that does not float too much. There should always be a layer of water on the soil and the water should have a temperature of at least 20grC. This may require heating, especially in winter. The plant also likes plenty of nutrition and relatively high humidity. With the right conditions, the plant's growth will be rapid.

Sowing description: The already germinated seed can be transferred directly into pond soil or something else that does not float too much. Keep the soil well moist and the temperature between 22 and 28grC. As a stem forms, the water level can be raised step by step so that there is a layer of water on the soil.
