Product description

The black berries of this species measure 5 cm and have a sweet flavour. They are high in antioxidants and minerals. In India and Sri Lanka, they are used in traditional medicine against diabetes, but they are also widely eaten as a snack due to their delicious flavour. It is a rare species that is unfortunately threatened in its survival due to habitat loss. The blooms are white and the flowers have prominent, protruding stamens, like most species in the family Myrtaceae. They are pollinated in nature by bees and butterflies, especially the giant honey bee.

In warm climates, the species can reach a height of 3-5 metres and grows as a shrub or small tree. With us, it can be kept as a house or tub plant at a minimum temperature of 5 degC. As the plant does not naturally grow very large, it is possible to keep it to flower in a pot. The plant is monoecious, so fruiting is possible with 1 plant. Provide well-drained soil and a position in sun to semi-shade.

Sowing description: Sow short-viable seeds directly in soil for sowing. Allow to germinate at 25-30grC, keeping soil constantly slightly moist.
