White frangipani (Plumeria alba)

The flowers of the plumeria alba are as extraordinary as those of plumeria rubra. The white flowers, with a yellow center, are accompanied by an amazing smell. This rare white species originates from the lesser Antilles and Puerto Rico and is not often cultivated outside of botanical gardens, making it a nice addition for any collector. Plumeria alba should not be confused with white flowering varieties of plumeria rubra, as they are distinct species. The leaves of the plumeria alba are narrow and elongated, reaching up to 30 cm in length and only 2-4 cm in width.

Like most frangipani species, Plumeria alba is a medium sized tree, typically reaching a height of 5-7 meters. With light pruning, it can also thrive as a pot plant. Given a well-draining soil and a sunny spot it is possible to get it to flower in the living room and enjoy the fragrance. During the winter months the plant will lose its leaves and watering frequency should be reduced accordingly.

Sowing description: Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 6 hours and sow in sowing mix. Germination usually occurs after a couple of weeks at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. Keep the soil continually moistened.
