Product description

The bontaka is a rare succulent plant native to the dry, rocky regions of Madagascar. Because it receives little rain there, the plant has developed a thick, spiny stem to retain moisture and deter herbivores. During the dry season, the plant can additionally drop its leaves to conserve water and grow them back when conditions improve.

Its striking appearance and bright red flowers make this species popular in plant collections. It is the only species in the Pachypodium genus that produces red flowers. While the plant grows up to 3 metres tall in its natural habitat, it usually stays smaller when grown in a pot. The species thrives well in sand-rich soil and needs full sun to partial shade for optimal growth. It is a slow grower and may take several years to mature. Protect the plant from temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

Sowing description: Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 3 hours before sowing. Plant the seeds in a well-drained cactus or succulent mix at a temperature of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist and do not place the seedlings in full sun yet.
