Family: Ochnaceae
Scientific name: Ochna thomasiana
Common name: Mickey Mouse plant
Origin: East Africa

The ripe black fruits form a good contrast against the bright red sepals, which makes it look a bit like Mickey Mouse. The species originates from eastern Africa where it grows in coastal forests in Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania. It grows as a shrub which can reach a height of 6 meters, however in a pot the plant stays a lot smaller and can still flower easily. The large yellow flowers are followed by green fruits which later change to black. The fruits are eaten by birds, which assists in the spreading of the seeds. In the tropics this is such an effective way of spreading the seeds, that it can become an invasive species.

It is a slow grower, which can be pruned relatively well. Provide a spot with sufficient light and a well-drained soil with sand. The plant does well as a houseplant, but can be moved outside in the summer months.

Sowing description: The seeds won't remain viable for too long. Sow the seeds in sowing soil and keep slightly moist. Germination after 5-6 weeks (possibly later) at around 25 grC.

Sowing time: Year round
Difficulty: Intermediate
Minimum temperature: 5 degrees Celsius
