This small-growing species has glossy, waxy leaves with a distinctive pattern. It is reminiscent of a turtle, which is why this plant has become known in culture as the 'Turtle Back'. There is confusion over the correct scientific name and there may even be different varieties from different areas in circulation. We provisionally call this species Labisia obtusifolia, because that name was published as early as 1901 following specimens in the rainforest in Borneo (where the origin of these seeds also lies). If it does turn out to be an undescribed Labisia or Ardisia species, we will update it here.
The species can be kept as a houseplant, but its small size also makes it suitable for a terrarium/paludarium. Ensure high humidity and otherwise spray the leaves with water regularly. The soil should be very permeable so consider a mix with perlite, moss and other organic material. It is best to keep that mixture slightly moist all the time.
Sowing description: The already germinated seed can be transferred directly into well-drained soil with organic material. A temperature of 25-30grC is optimal for initial development.
