Description

The paintbrush is a special, small plant from the coastal areas of South Africa where it grows in cool, shadow-rich areas in forests. The plant sprouts from an underground tuber and produces one set of thick leaves a year. The leaves on the bottom die off every so often, so there are never more than 2 or 3 leaves on the plant at a time. It can flower once a year with white, paintbrush-like flowers. These grow out above the plant and have striking orange pollen at the tips of the flowers. After flowering orange-red fruits appear.

The plant is easy to keep as a houseplant that can best be kept in a cool place during winter. Make sure to provide well draining soil with sand and only water the plant when the soil has fully dried up. The plant also does not respond well to direct sunlight, so a more shaded place is better.

Sowing description: Sow seeds directly after receiving in sowing mix. Keep soil lightly moist and and germinate at 20-25dgC.
