Family: Araceae
Scientific name: Cyrtosperma timikense
Common name: Cyrtosperma
Origin: Papua, Indonesia

Very rare species from the swamp forests of Papua in Indonesia. The unusually shaped leaves there can grow up to 2.5 meters tall and then have a ribbed surface. The species was only described in 2020, after a population was found near the town of Timika in southwest Papua. This only a few meters above sea level, so the rainforest is regularly flooded by rainfall. Little is known about the species, but it seems to be able to withstand wet conditions. In addition, in the tropics, the plant produces with some regularity an inflorescence on a long flower stalk. The bract of that inflorescence is colored brownish purple and can reach a height of 2 meters because of the long stem.

It is a very tropical species, so it is important to provide high humidity (at least 70%) and temperature (25-30grC). The plant develops a rhizome, from which new shoots can grow. In addition, provide an airy soil with organic material, give the plant plenty of water and a bright location without direct sunlight.

The seeds are from cultivated plants.

Sowing description: The already germinated seed can further develop into Spaghnum moss. After the formation of the first leaves, it can be repotted in a light soil mixture with e.g. Spaghnum, peat, coconut fiber and/or other organic material.

Sowing period: Whole year
Difficulty: Intermediate
Minimum temperature: 15 degrees Celsius
