Product description

The handkerchief tree is an extraordinary leguminous species from New Guinea. This tree appears to flower twice a year, although these events are distinctly different. At the start of the rainy season, the tree develops new, pale white leaves that droop in clusters. These clusters of white leaves somewhat resemble handkerchiefs, hence the name of the species and its striking appearance. This phenomenon lasts only a few days, after which the new leaves have developed enough chlorophyll to color a shiny dark green. The second time the tree turn white is during the dry season. In that period, the tree produces clusters of white flowers with long stamens that again, decorate the tree white. For this reason the species is often planted in public parks and recreational areas. After pollination by birds, a 7 cm long pod is formed containing a single small seed.

It is a medium sized tree, with a maximum height of around 20-25 meters. Like most tropical trees, with some pruning, the tree can be kept a manageable size indoors. The plant benefits from a high humidity, so be sure to mist the plant regularly. The soil should be constantly slightly moist and somewhat airy, which can be achieved by mixing cocopeat and potting soil. Younger plants should be protected from full sun.

Sowing description: Sow the seeds in sowing mix at a temperature of around 25 degrees Celsius. The soil and seedling should be kept constantly moist during early development. This can best be achieved by covering the pot with a plastic bag.
