The Betel Nut palm is mostly known for its nuts which are popular for chewing in many Asian countries. Betel nuts are the seeds of the palm and chewing on them can give a euphoric and cheerful feeling, and can reduce the feeling of hunger. However, the use is slightly addictive, and has adverse health effects. Chewing on the seeds causes saliva to turn red, and with regular use it can turn teeth red as well. The red colour results from the mixing of the seeds with chalk, clove and tabaco. This mixture is rolled in the leaves of the betel pepper, and is ready for use.
The palm can grow as big as 15 meters in tropic regions, is very decorative and can be kept as an indoor plant in temperate regions. The stem is remarkable because of the smooth green part. It deals well with a low air humidity, but prefers to be frequently watered and have sufficient (indirect) light.

Sowing directions: Seeds have a short viability. Sow the seeds for a few hours in water, and sow them in sowing mix thereafter. Keep the soil constantly moist and let them germinate at 25-30 degC. Germination occurs usually after 3-8 weeks, but can still be expected as long as the seeds are firm.

Sowing time: Whole year
Difficulty: Intermediate
Minimum temperature: 10 degC
