Family: Araceae
Scientific name: Alocasia suhirmaniana
Common name: Alocasia
Origin: Sulawesi, Indonesia

This rare species has shiny, dark green leaves with prominent, light veins. The leaves can reach a size of 80 cm in nature, but in culture they usually remain somewhat smaller. The inflorescence is purple-brown in color and is followed by orange-red berries after pollination. Originally, the plant grows in a small area in Kolaka Utara on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. In moist, shady places in the rainforest and especially on slopes where there is a lot of limestone in the soil.

Provide a light location without direct sunlight and a well-drained soil type with organic material. Because the plant occurs in nature in places with limestone, it may be good to mix some extra lime through the soil. It is also important to keep the soil constantly moist, but not too wet. If the humidity is below 70%, you can spray the leaves with water regularly. The temperature is best between 25 and 30 deg C, but room temperature seems to be possible as well.

Sowing description: The seed can be germinated (further) in Sphagnum moss at a temperature of 25 to 30 deg C. After the formation of the first roots it can be transferred to a well-drained, airy soil.

Sowing period: Whole year
Difficulty: Intermediate
Minimum temperature: 15 degrees Celsius
