The goji berry has its origin in China, and was introduced in Europe in the 18th century. Currently, the plant grows in many areas in Europe. The plant is commercially appraised as a healthy ‘superfood’. The berries are orange/red, are 2 cm big and do indeed contain many antioxidants and vitamins. They grow on branches of 2-3 meter long, with sharp thorns. They are cultivated on a large scale in China for their health benefits. In addition, it is easy to grow the gojiberry in your own garden. The plant is winter hardy and will stay relatively small. After 2 or 3 years, the first berries can be harvested. The berries can be freshly processed in smoothies or juices, or can be dried and used like raisins.
