Product description

Wax gourds are large fruits from southeast Asia that can be added as a vegetable to all kinds of Asian dishes. It is an annual climbing plant with long, hairy stems and eventually large, heavy fruits. Usually up to 60 cm tall and 15 KG heavy, but under the right conditions they can grow even larger. They are best eaten unripe and the white flesh has a sweet taste. This can be cooked in cubes in a broth or added to a stew. As the fruit ripens, a white, waxy layer is formed on the skin. This ensures that the fruits can be stored for months after harvest.

In the Netherlands the plant is best grown in a greenhouse, but it is also possible in a sheltered, sunny spot in the garden. However, the fruit set will be better in a greenhouse because of the higher temperature.

Sowing description: Sow seeds in seed and cutting soil and let them germinate at 22-28 degrees Celsius. Keep the soil constantly lightly moist. Germination within a few weeks.
