Product description

The gowok fruit tree is a special tree from Southeast Asia that is known for the small edible berries that grow in clusters on the tree. This Syzygium species comes from the same genus as for example cloves and has many names, including kupa, dompyong and kaliasem. The tree is mainly found on the island of Java and can reach a height of 8 to 20 metres in tropical forests. Characteristic of this species are the elongated leaves with distinct veins and the clusters of small white flowers with many stamens that grow directly on the trunk. The berries that follow turn wine red when ripe and have a white juicy flesh. They are somewhat similar to cranberries and have a sweet and sour taste. The berries can be eaten both fresh and cooked. Traditionally, the berries are also used to make a good quality jelly. The young leaves and shoots can also be eaten as a vegetable. New leaves turn from pink-purple to green. The tree can flower and produce berries from 3-5 years of age.

In temperate climates, the species can be kept as a houseplant or in a bigger container. The tree will remain much smaller in these circumstances. Place the plant in a bright spot without direct sunlight. Older plants can tolerate some sunlight. Ensure a slightly warm spot and spray the leaves regularly to mimic a high humidity.

Sowing description: the germinated seeds can be sown immediately upon arrival in seed and cutting soil. Ensure that the soil is constantly slightly moist and place in a temperature between 25-28°C.
