Chupa-Chupa (Matisia cordata)

Product description

The chupa-chupa is a fruit from the tree of the same name from South America and is also known as the South American sapote. The tree on which this fruit grows occurs naturally in the tropical forests of the Amazon in Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, where it can grow up to 45 metres high. The leaves are large and heart-shaped, making it a beautiful species to keep even without the fruit. The tree produces strikingly shaped flowers directly on the branches and trunk, which, after pollination by hummingbirds, bees or wasps, are followed by large round to egg-shaped fruits. The chupa-chupa fruit has a brownish-green, leathery skin and bright orange flesh, which can be slightly hairy. It is a juicy and slightly creamy fruit with flavours of mango, carrot and pineapple. Locally, the fruits are eaten fresh or processed into juices and smoothies. The tree can flower from 5-7 years of age. Several plants are generally needed for fruit to set.

In temperate climates, this tree can be kept as a houseplant or container plant. It is a semi-evergreen tree that does not experience a dry period in natural conditions. Temperatures above 18°C are ideal for the species. Older trees do well with some direct sunlight. Protect young trees from direct sunlight and wind. Ensure the pot has good drainage and water the tree regularly. The leaves can be sprayed regularly to increase humidity. 

Sowing instructions: Upon receipt of the germinated seed, it can be sown directly into sowing and cutting compost. Cover and keep the soil constantly slightly moist. Place in a location with plenty of indirect sunlight and a temperature between 20-30°C for initial development.
