The Broad leaved Garcinia is a rare species from the tropical lowland forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Papua New Guinea, and produces edible red fruits. In nature, the tree grows to a height of 25 metres. The dark green leaves of the tree are elongated, shiny and leathery. The foliage is only found at the top of the tree, which means that the fruits are generally picked up from the ground. The tree produces both male and female small flowers that are white to yellowish in colour. The fruits that follow pollination are elongated and usually contain two large seeds. The fruit changes colour during ripening from yellow to orange to red. The flesh has a bright pink colour and is very juicy. The taste is sweet with a fresh sour flavour.
In temperate climates, the species can be kept as a houseplant. Ensure high humidity and a warm location. This can be achieved by regularly spraying the plant with water. Provide a location with plenty of indirect light and water regularly. It is a slow grower.
Sowing description: After receiving the seed, it can be sown in seed and cutting soil. Cover for higher humidity. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist. Place in a location with plenty of indirect light and a temperature between 25-30 °C for initial development.
