Description

The red sapote is a very rare tree with sapote-like fruits that resemble a tomtato in appearance. The species originates from the tropical forests of Sulawesi. Despite its common name, it is not a true sapote, but belongs to the same family as coffee. The small white and fragrant flowers are followed by bright red fruits up to 10 cm in size, which are edible and have a juicy sweet-sour taste. The flesh is also red in colour and has a slightly jelly-like texture.

This relatively unknown species is an interesting species to keep as a houseplant in temperate climates. Provide slightly tropical conditions with plenty of indirect light, high temperatures and high humidity. The latter can also be achieved by spraying the plant regularly. Keep the plant in well-drained soil and water regularly.

Sowing description: Upon receipt of the germinated seed, it can be sown directly in seed and cutting soil. Ensure a temperature of 25-30°C for initial development. Cover the germinated seed for high humidity and keep constantly moist. Place in a spot with plenty of indirect sunlight.
