The asam kambang is a wild mango that is popular with the local population because of its delicious sweet and sour taste. The species originates from Malaysia and Indonesia, where it is quite rare, but its mangoes are regularly sold at markets. They are eaten ripe or used unripe in all kinds of recipes. The trees can grow up to 25 metres tall in the tropics and have a dense canopy. They grow in lowland rainforests along rivers and in swampy areas with relatively acidic soil. New leaves slowly change colour from bronze-purple to a deep green. The fruits have a deep purple skin and orange-yellow flesh and are about the size of a tennis ball. This mango variety is also used as a rootstock for crossing with the Kasturi mango.
In temperate climates, the variety can be kept as a houseplant, whereby the plant should be kept in tropical conditions as much as possible. Ensure high humidity and keep the soil constantly slightly moist. Provide a warm place with plenty of indirect light.
Sowing description: Upon receipt of the seed, it can be sown immediately in sowing and cutting soil. Cover to ensure high humidity. Place in a location with plenty of indirect light and a temperature between 25-30 degrees Celsius.
