Product description

Dragon's blood rattan is a special climbing palm species from Southeast Asia, known for its blood-red dye extracted from its resin. The palm grows naturally in the tropical forests of Thailand to West Malaysia, where it grows against other trees. The name dragon's blood was probably already used for this dye by the Greeks in the 1st century AD. The pigment harvested from the resin is used to dye textiles red, but also in toothpaste and food. In addition, the resin contains a substance that makes food less bitter, making the dye popular in the food industry. The stem of the species is also used to make rattan products. The frequent harvesting of the dye is the main reason why the climbing palm is becoming increasingly rare in the wild.

The palm grows in clusters of several stems that can climb up to 15 metres high. These stems bear graceful pinnate leaves that can grow up to 2.5 metres long in nature. It is a dioecious palm, which means that male and female plants are needed for fruiting. Under the right conditions, the palm produces flower clusters that, after pollination, produce fruits with a skin like dragon skin. The outside of the fruit is often completely covered in red resin.

In temperate climates, the species can be kept as a houseplant, in which case it is important that the palm has something to climb against. Ensure well-drained soil and a warm location with plenty of indirect light. The species thrives in tropical conditions, so regularly spraying the leaves can help to create higher humidity.

Sowing description: After receiving the germinated seed, it can be sown directly in sowing and cutting soil. Cover for higher humidity and place in a location with indirect light. A temperature between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius is ideal for initial development.
