Product description

The stilt mangrove is an iconic mangrove species with long stilt roots that can grow high above the water. This species is native to the tropical coasts of Southeast Asia and islands in the western Pacific Ocean. There, it can reach an average height of 8 metres, although some trees can grow up to 30 metres tall. As with other mangrove species, the prop roots enable the tree to withstand high waves and storms. In addition, the roots provide a safe place for many animal species, making it a nursery for ocean life. Mud crab species in particular also benefit from this mangrove species, as the micro-organisms around the roots are good for the growth of these crabs. In addition, the filter system has a positive effect on water quality, which in turn benefits the mangrove itself. The species can also tolerate salt water well, as the roots can filter salt from the water and excess salt can be removed by shedding leaves. The flowers are small and yellow and are pollinated by the wind.

The seeds are viviparous, which means that they germinate on the tree and fall from the tree as propagules. They then float and can spread in this way. The plant can be kept in an aquarium, paludarium or vase. Although it can tolerate salt well, the plant does not need salt to grow properly. Initially, provide a location with plenty of indirect light and, after the first leaves appear, a location with plenty of direct sunlight. A mixture of sand and pond soil is suitable, and a water temperature between 25-35 °C is optimal for initial development.

Sowing instructions: Insert seeds with the broad base into the soil and raise the water level to about half the height of the seed. Grow in a light spot, ensuring that the leaves do not become submerged.
