Description

The Silk Vine is a deciduous climbing plant native to southeastern Europe and western Asia. Its natural range extends from Italy and the Balkans to Türkiye and the Caucasus, where it grows along woodland edges, riverbanks and among shrubs. The twining stems can reach a length of around 10 metres. During summer, clusters of star-shaped reddish-brown to purple-brown flowers are produced. These are followed by long, slender seed pods that split open when ripe, releasing numerous seeds with silky tufts that are dispersed by the wind.

The species is fully hardy and can be grown outdoors in temperate climates. Provide a sunny to partly shaded position and a well-drained soil. It is well suited to growing against a fence, pergola or trellis and responds well to pruning. Young plants benefit from some support during their first years before developing into vigorous climbers.

Sowing description:
Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 48 hours. Then sow them in sowing mix (potting soil-sand in a 1:1 ratio) in a bright location at a temperature of 20–25 °C. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist. If the seeds do not germinate after several weeks, a 4–6 week period in the refrigerator may help to break their dormancy.
