Moringa drouhardii, also known as the ghost tree, originates from one of the world's most ecologically significant regions: the Madagascar spiny thickets. This region endures prolonged periods of drought, sometimes lasting several years. As a result, plants in this area have evolved unique adaptations to survive these extended dry periods. These adaptations include extensive root systems with tubers, enlarged trunks and branches, specialized leaves, thorns, and waxy coatings. Due to these adaptations, the region is home to a vast number of species that are endemic, making many of them extremely rare.
This species has a specialized trunk that stores large amounts of water, similar to baobab trees, while its branches are short and compact. The seeds of the tree are high in oil content (36-45%), and the oil is valued for being odorless, tasteless, and easily preserved, making it a popular ingredient in various cosmetic products.
The plant can be grown in pots with well-drained sandy soil and requires full sun. It needs only small amounts of water but can grow rapidly under ideal conditions, sometimes up to 1 meter per year. The trunk can reach a diameter of 70 cm and a height of up to 15 meters, though when grown indoors, it will remain smaller. The tree enters dormancy during the dry season, which in temperate regions typically occurs in winter. Temperatures should not drop below 15°C.
Sowing description: The seeds can be sown in sowing mix. Keep the soil constantly moist (but not wet) and let the seeds germinate in a warm spot (20-25 degC). Germination occurs often within a few weeks.
