The red ginger lily has a very striking red inflorescence just above the ground and belongs to the same family as the ginger plant. This species originates from Southeast Asia, where it can be found in the tropical rainforests of Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, among other places. In Malaysia, the species is also known as Tuhau. Locally, the tubers, fruits and shoots of the plant are eaten and used in meals.
The leaf shoots of this species can grow up to 7 metres high in nature, with individual leaves reaching 1 metre in length. They develop from an underground rhizome. The striking flowers appear at the base and are bright red with yellow in the centre of the petals. In nature, they are pollinated by birds.
In a temperate climate, the species can be kept as a houseplant. In low humidity, the leaves can be sprayed regularly with water. Avoid direct sunlight, but ensure sufficient indirect light. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist.
Sowing description: After receiving the germinated seeds, they can be sown directly in sowing and cutting soil. Cover for higher humidity. Provide a warm place around 25-30 degrees Celsius with plenty of indirect light for initial development.
