This elegant aroid has dark green to almost black leaves with a pink edge and originates from Thailand. The stem has a striking pink-red colour that continues to the underside of the leaf. With a maximum height of 50 cm, it is a relatively small species compared to other Amorphophallus species. After a growth period of about six months, the leaves die off and the plant enters a dormant period. After a few years, the plant can flower with an elegant inflorescence consisting of a creamy white bract and a pink spadix.
In nature, this aroid grows between limestone rocks, where it roots deeply and forms elongated tubers. In a temperate climate, the species can be kept as a houseplant, in which case it is important to place the plant in a fairly tall pot. Like other aroid lilies, this species grows from an underground tuber. During the growing season, the soil can be kept slightly moist, but during the dormant period (usually in the winter months) it is important to allow the soil to dry out in between watering to prevent the tuber from rotting. Growth at room temperature is sufficient, although higher temperatures do promote growth.
Sowing instructions: Upon receipt of the germinated seeds, they can be sown immediately in seed and cutting compost. Temperatures above 20°C are beneficial for initial development. Ensure a location with plenty of indirect light. Keep the soil slightly moist.
