Description

This is a remarkable, rare species of Amorphophallus from the rainforests of Brunei and Sarawak on Borneo. The species is particularly striking due to its unusual inflorescence, featuring a white spadix that can grow up to 80 cm long, often reaching right down to the ground. The spathe is reddish-purple in colour and reaches a height of approximately 60–90 cm. In addition to this distinctive inflorescence, the leaves are also beautiful to look at. They are notable for their light-coloured midrib, which makes this species a striking sight even without flowers.
 
The plant develops an underground corm from which a single large leaf or an inflorescence emerges each year. During a drier period (often in winter in our climate), the leaf dies back, after which the corm enters a dormant phase. In spring, the corm will then sprout again, eventually producing first a flower and then a leaf. The species grows best in warm conditions with high humidity and a light, organic soil. Use, for example, a mixture of potting compost, coconut fibre and other coarse organic material. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist during the growing season, but avoid prolonged wet conditions around the tuber. A light spot without direct sunlight is recommended. During the dormant period, the tuber can be stored in drier and slightly cooler conditions.

Sowing instructions: The pre-germinated seed can be sown directly into well-draining soil containing organic matter and, for example, perlite. A temperature of 25–30°C is optimal for initial development.
