This is a rare Amorphophallus from West Africa, native to Gambia and Senegal. The species mainly grows in low-lying areas with moist to swampy soils. These areas experience seasonal dry periods, during which the plant dies back above ground and becomes dormant as an underground tuber.
The plant grows to around 70 cm tall and produces a single compound leaf from the tuber. The petiole can vary considerably in colour, from uniformly dark green to beige with dark green spots. The inflorescence is relatively small and appears on a flower stalk that can reach around 50 cm in height. The spathe is beige with green spots and surrounds a dark-coloured spadix.
In temperate climates, the species can be grown as a houseplant or container plant. During active growth, the plant can be kept in a warm, bright position and the soil should be kept slightly moist. Use an airy, well-drained soil so that excess water can drain away easily. When the leaf turns yellow and begins to die back, watering can gradually be reduced. During dormancy, the tuber can be kept drier until it starts to grow again.
Sowing instructions: Sow the seeds in an airy, well-draining soil mix and keep the soil lightly moist. A temperature of approximately 22–28°C is suitable for the initial development.
