Red Traveller’s Palm

Madagascar

15 degrees Celsius

Description:

An impressive new Ravenalafrom Madagascar with a nice red leaf base. It is unknown if this is a new species not yet described or if it is a variety from the Ravenala madagascariensis. It is a rare plant which is similar in growth to the normal travelers tree. The name originates from the myth in old travel books, where it was said to have great use for travellers. Water would collect in the leaf axillaries of the tree, which are quite large due to the leaf position. That water could be used as drinking water. The leaves are said to grow in a north-south orientation so they could be used as a natural compass.
