Description

Perlite is a lightweight, porous material of volcanic origin that is used to improve the structure of seed compost and potting soil. Mixing perlite into the soil creates a more aerated growing medium, allowing excess water to drain away more easily while ensuring that the roots receive sufficient oxygen. This helps prevent the soil from becoming too compact and remaining wet for prolonged periods, which can hinder healthy root development.

Perlite is particularly suitable for sowing seeds and growing many tropical and subtropical plant species. An aerated growing medium is important both during germination and for the further growth of young and mature plants. Species that are sensitive to excessively wet soil can especially benefit from the addition of perlite. Perlite can also be used to improve drainage for other plants, including cacti and succulents. It can easily be mixed with seed and cutting compost, potting soil or other growing media. The amount required depends on the plant species and the desired soil structure. As a general guideline, approximately 20–30% perlite by volume can be added to the soil. A higher proportion can be used for species that require a particularly aerated and well-draining growing medium.

This perlite from PULL in Rhenen, the Netherlands, is of professional horticultural quality and has a particle size of 0–6.5 mm. The material is lightweight, has an almost neutral pH (approximately 6.5) and naturally contains no nutrients. Perlite does not decompose in the soil and therefore retains its structure for a long time.
