Family: Bignoniaceae
Scientific name: Handroanthus impetiginosus
Common name: Pink ipê
Origin: South America

The pink ipê blooms stunningly beautiful with numerous pink flowers that are pollinated by hummingbirds. It is a tropical tree from the rainforests of South America that can withstand surprisingly low temperatures: temperatures up to -5 degrees Celsius do not cause any problems. The species can also be cultivated in a colder climate and grow most part of the year outside, but must be protected in the winter against low temperatures.
The tree may naturally reach a height of 30 meters and produces highly durable wood. This hardwood is popular within the timber industry, which is why this species has already led to problems in the Amazon. Because the trees spread out, there are e.g. also have been created many roads in order to reach the trees.

The locals use the bark of the tree as a traditional remedy for flu. They draw lapacho tea from the bark, which is in the interest of science.
