Product description

The yellow nickernut is less common than the grey nickernut, but resembles to the Caesalpinia bonduc. The yellow seeds are 2 cm wide and are used for jewellery and mancala games. The seed dispersal takes place through the ocean, so the seeds can be found on tropical beaches. It’s a climbing brush that grows over plants and trees. The pods have spines and generally two seeds. Because it’s a tropical plant, the species can be kept as a houseplant in a temperate climate.

Sowing instructions: Saw or notch the seeds a bit, so that there is a small gap created in the hard pericarp. Take care and do not damage the bud. Next, soak the seeds overnight in water and sow in sowing mix. Constantly keep the soil most, cover with plastic foil and let them germinate on a warm spot.

Family: Fabaceae
Scientific name: Caesalpinia ciliata
Common name: Yellow Nickernut
Native to: Central America

Sowing time: All year round
Difficulty: Intermediate
