Product description

The cashew is a tropical tree that can be kept as a container plant or houseplant. The fruits of the plant consist out of the real fruit: a kidney-shaped bean, and the cashew apple, a swollen fruit stem. Both parts can be eaten: the cashew apple fresh from the tree and in the still toxic cashew bean. The nut has to be roasted before it can be eaten. Worldwide, cashew nuts are cultivated and today India is the largest producer, while the plant is native to South America. The cashew may grow in colder climates as a container plant with a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. Move the plant inside on time when it’s getting colder outside. Water the plant regularly and find a sunny spot for it.

Sowing description: Note that the seeds are fresh and therefore are still toxic, as opposed to the processed, roasted cashew nuts which you can find in the store.
Sow the seeds in sowing mix and keep the soil constantly moist. Germinate them at 25-30 degrees Celsius.

Family: Anacardiaceae
Scientific name: Anacardium occidentale
Common name: Cashew
Native to: Caribbean

Sowing time: Whole year
Difficulty: Easy
Minimum temperature: 5 degrees Celcius

Since I managed to kill my first set of seeds I decided to try these again. Put them all in soil in small pots, covered with a perforated bag. Two did nothing after about 3 weeks, two others germinated and are growing just fine, putting out a new leaf once a week, even if it's almost December. I did germinate them in October which was a warm and sunny month in my area, so definitely try these when you can ensure enough heat for them to actually have a chance to germinate, otherwise they will just rot.

Ioana

2 of these were killed by mould inside as much as outside but just noticed that the 3rd one germinated. I kept it on a heated mat that was on during the day and off during the night and I sprayed with water but didn't keep the soil too damp but rather on the dry side.
