Product description

The Galápagos tomato originates, as its name suggests, from the Galápagos Islands. It is one of two wild tomato species that occur naturally on these islands. The species grows mainly in dry coastal areas with sandy, well-drained soils.

The plant produces small, round fruits that turn bright yellow to orange when ripe. The fruits are fairly small and grow in large clusters. They are edible and can be used in the same way as modern tomatoes, in salads or sauces for example. The plant grows as a shrub to a height of about 2 metres and is fairly easy to maintain. Because the plant grows naturally on the coast, it is somewhat resistant to extreme weather conditions.

In temperate climates, this species can be grown as an annual plant outdoors, in the greenhouse or in a large pot. The plant likes a sunny position and well-drained soil, making it a nice addition to the vegetable garden. Regular watering is preferred, but the roots should not remain wet for long periods to prevent root rot. The species is not hardy and cannot tolerate frost. In a pot, the plant can be overwintered frost-free in a light spot indoors.

It is also possible to cross this species at home with our other wild tomato in the shop, Solanum pimpinellifolium. This allows you to grow your own tomato hybrid after just one season. This hybrid also naturally occurs on the Galápagos Islands, as S. pimpinellifolium has naturalised there.

Sowing description: Sow the seeds during springtime indoors in sowing mix, and let the seeds germinate at 20-25 degC. Keep the soil constantly moist (cover the soil with plastic or foil). Seedlings can be planted outside from may/june onwards.
