This very rare palm tree originates from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi (formerly known as Celebes) and several smaller surrounding islands. As a young plant, it has striking red leaf stalks. The young pinnate leaves, which are 2-3 metres long, are also red or orange in colour and slowly change to a deep green colour. A healthy palm tree has 5 to 8 leaves growing on the trunk at the same time. As the palm tree ages, the petioles change colour from red/orange to yellow and then green. In nature, the palm grows in low-lying rainforests and can reach a height of between 5 and 12 metres. From the age of 2, the palm usually starts to form a trunk that leaves graceful scars as it grows and resembles a bamboo trunk. The species is remarkably good at growing on different types of soil and is found in nature on both volcanic and calcareous soils.
In temperate climates, the species can be kept as a houseplant in a place with plenty of indirect light. The species thrives at temperatures between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius and grows best in well-drained soil that is kept constantly moist. Spray the palm regularly if the humidity falls below 65%.
Sowing instructions: Upon receipt of the germinated seed, it can be sown directly into sowing and cutting soil. Cover for higher humidity and ensure a location with plenty of indirect light and a temperature between 26-30 degrees Celsius for initial development. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist.
