Product description

This variety of tobacco is native to Peru, but has since spread across the globe due to its successful cultivation in (sub)tropical and temperate regions.

The variety has an interesting and long history. It has been used for hundreds of years by indigenous groups in South America. It was believed to appease the spirits in offering rituals, there were healing rituals for people with ailments, and the tobacco was used in peace pipes. Following the introduction of the species in Europe, it became known as ‘farmers’ tobacco’ or ‘Aztek tobacco’, as the species proved to be very robust and easy to grow on a small scale. Nowadays, however, the species is no longer cultivated, as it became easier and cheaper to import tobacco made from Nicotiana tabacum. Furthermore, the nicotine content in Nicotiana tabacum is 5 to 20 times lower and more consistent than in farmer’s tobacco, making it milder to smoke. Smoking farmer's tobacco is however not recommended due to its high nicotine content. Only during the Second World War did farmer’s tobacco experience a resurgence in the Netherlands due to a shortage of ordinary tobacco.

Because of its high nicotine content, farmer’s tobacco is an effective, natural insecticide in the vegetable garden. The dried and ground leaves can be scattered around plants to repel insects. Leaves can also be soaked in water, after which this water can be poured over the plants in the vegetable garden. Nicotine is a toxic substance that can be absorbed through the skin (as is the case with nicotine patches), so it is advised to wear gloves when handling it.

The plant can grow up to 1.20 m tall, but usually remains slightly smaller. In temperate climates, the species can be grown as an annual, but can also be overwintered indoors if necessary. Ensure a sunny position and water regularly.

Sowing instructions: Sow the small seeds very close to the surface in a sowingmixture, and cover the pot with glas or plastic foil. Germination occurs after a few weeks, keep the soil constantly moist and put the pot in a light area.
