The Indian mast tree is a striking elongated tree with decorative wavy leaves. This tropical species originates from southern India and Sri Lanka and is also known by the synonym Polyalthia longifolia. There, the tree grows to a height of 20 metres with hanging, elongated leaves that have a wavy edge. Despite its tropical origins, the tree also grows well in subtropical conditions. When young, the leaves change colour from copper to green. The tree can be cultivated as a columnar tree, which is why this species is often planted along roadsides. In addition, the trunk of the tree is traditionally used for the masts of sailing ships. In later life, the tree can form clusters of small greenish-yellow, star-shaped flowers. The dark purple fruits are eaten in nature by birds and flying foxes.
In temperate climates, the species can be kept as a large houseplant. Provide a warm place with plenty of indirect light and a pot with well-drained soil. The species can be pruned well during the growing season. Especially older plants can withstand dry periods well.
Sowing description: The germinated seeds can be sown immediately in sowing soil. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist and cover for higher humidity. Place in a spot with plenty of indirect light and a temperature around 25 °C.
