Family: Fabaceae
Scientific name: Lasiobema scandens (formerly Bauhinia scandens)
Common name: Climbing orchid tree
Origin: Southeast Asia

This vine grows in the rainforests of Southeast Asia and forms winding, woody stems. Some stems form a ladder-like shape, which is why they are also called monkey ladders. The species can grow up to 15 meters tall in the tropics, winding its way high into trees. The rather small flowers grow with many in clusters and are colored white with a yellow center. They resemble an orchid, which is why this group of plants is also called orchid trees. Previously, they all belonged to the genus Bauhinia, but today the climbing species are classified in the genus Phanera and Lasiobema (like this species). The shrubs and trees have remained in the genus Bauhinia. The leaf of this species still shows the link with the Bauhinia species, as it is heart-shaped ('obcordate'), which is characteristic of orchid trees. The tips of the leaves are pointed in this species.

The species can be kept as a houseplant, where it is possible to reduce its size by pruning. Provide a light location and well-drained soil with organic matter.
