This is an elegant, rare palm tree from the main island Grande Terre of New Caledonia. There, the species occurs in the centre and north-east of the island in moist forests up to 900 metres above sea level. In the wild, the palm can reach a height of 12 metres and has a striking dark purple trunk with light stripes. The leaf stalks are also purple at the base and can reach a length of 2 metres.
The genus Cyphosperma consists of only five species, all of which originate from islands in the Pacific Ocean. Cyphosperma balansae is easily distinguished by its inflorescence, which hangs down and can reach a length of 2 metres. After flowering, a large cluster of red fruits forms. The species can be kept as a houseplant, provided the humidity is sufficiently high. In addition, ensure a light location without direct sunlight and constantly moist, well-drained soil.
Sowing description: Sow short viable seeds in a well-drained sowing mix. Keep the soil constantly moist and the temperature between 25 and 30 degC. Germination can follow as long as the seeds are hard.
