This is a rare cycad that occurs naturally in coastal regions of Southeast Asia, including parts of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. The species often grows there on sandy soils, along beaches and in open forests, sometimes even in places that come into contact with seawater. This makes the plant relatively tolerant of salty conditions and periods of drought. Its wide distribution is due to the floating seeds that are dispersed between islands by ocean currents.
The plant forms a sturdy trunk topped by a crown of pinnate leaves that can range in colour from blue-green to grey-green. In the wild, this cycad can grow to a height of several metres, although growth is very slow. Indoors, the plant remains smaller.
The plant is suited to a warm, bright spot and thrives at temperatures between 20 and 30°C. The species can tolerate slightly lower temperatures for short periods, but is not winter hardy and must be kept as a container plant or houseplant in temperate climates. Ensure well-draining soil, preferably a light mixture containing sand and organic matter. Water regularly, but avoid the roots remaining wet for long periods. A drier period between waterings is generally well tolerated.
Sowing instructions: The seeds can be sown in a airy, well-draining sowing medium, such as a mixture of sand and potting compost. Keep the soil slightly moist and maintain a constant temperature of around 25–30°C.
