Product description

The white mangrove is a pioneer among mangroves, as it is often the first species to colonise new mudflats. It can be found along river mouths and banks, as well as along the coast. The species occurs naturally in tropical India, Southeast Asia and northern Australia, where it reaches a height of between 5 and 20 metres. Like the grey and black mangroves, the white mangrove grows striking aerial roots that emerge upright from the ground. These allow oxygen to penetrate the soil and give the tree extra strength. Excess salt that enters the tree through the water is excreted through the leaves. The mangrove owes its name to the light underside of its leaves. Under the right conditions, this mangrove species can bloom with small orange-yellow flowers. Pollination is followed by small pear-shaped fruits. The seeds germinate in the fruit while it is still hanging on the tree, after which they fall off and float to a new location.

It is a fast grower that is ideal as a houseplant. Ensure the soil is moist and place it in a sunny spot at a temperature between 20-30 degrees Celsius. The mangrove can grow in both salt and fresh water.

Sowing description: The germinated seed can be sown immediately upon receipt in a mixture of sand and seed and cutting compost. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist to wet. A temperature between 25-30 degrees Celsius is ideal for initial development.
