Description

The mouse deer tree is a small tree from Southeast Asia, native to areas including Borneo, Sumatra, Java and the Malay Peninsula. The species mainly grows in moist lowland forests and swamps, often in the shade of larger trees.

In the wild, the plant can reach a height of around 7 metres and is particularly notable for the way its leaves grow. The leaves have almost no leaf stalks and grow nearly directly from the branches. Interestingly, the plant produces two different types of leaves. The larger leaves provide most of the leaf surface area, while much smaller leaves grow between them. The large and small leaves alternate along the branches, creating a regular pattern. This phenomenon is known as anisophylly and refers to the presence of leaves of different sizes on the same plant. The genus name Anisophyllea also refers to this characteristic. The different leaf sizes may help prevent the leaves from shading each other, which can be particularly beneficial in shady forests. This regular leaf arrangement also gives the plant an attractive appearance, making it a suitable addition to the living room.

Small, inconspicuous flowers can develop on the undersides of the branches. The species is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers grow on separate plants. After pollination, the female flowers can develop into red fruits approximately 2 cm in size. According to local people, the ripe fruits are eaten by mousedeer, small deer-like mammals found in the forests of Southeast Asia. This is also where the name mouse deer tree comes from.

In temperate climates, the species can be grown as a houseplant. Due to its tropical origin, it is best to provide a warm position with plenty of indirect light. Use well-drained soil containing sufficient organic matter. Keep the soil consistently slightly moist, but avoid allowing the roots to remain in waterlogged soil for extended periods. High humidity is recommended.

Sowing description: Sow the seeds in an airy, well-draining seed and cutting compost. Keep the soil consistently slightly moist and provide a warm location with a temperature of around 25–30°C. Cover with foil or glass if necessary to maintain higher humidity and place in a bright location without direct sunlight.
