Product description

This is a rare Alocasia species found on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. The plant grows in moist lowland rainforests with consistently high humidity and temperature. In the tropics the leaves can grow to a meter in size and are distinguished by the large, light coloured veins. In juvenile plants these veins are silver-white and change to light green later on. The inflorescence is white and consists of a bract and spadix, as is typical for arum flowers.

The species can be kept as a houseplant in a spot with sufficient light, without direct sunlight. Provide a well-draining, constantly moist soil and, if necessary, give regular plant food for faster growth. In addition, it is good to pray the leaves regularly with water to mimic high humidity and avoid a position near a heater.

Dr. Max van Balgooy was a Dutch botanist working in Leiden. He specialized in Southeast Asian flora and discovered many plant species in that area during his expeditions. This Alocasia species is named after him.

Sowing description: The already germinated seed can be planted directly into a well-draining soil. E.g. a mixture of Spaghnum, sand and coconut soil. Keep the soil moist and warm (25-30°C is optimal).

Seed I received wasn’t the strongest one and had some rot already. Unfortunately it didn’t make it….
